A project I have wanted to tackle for a while was cleaning up our flower beds. They were a total mess when we moved in with all sorts of weeds and poison ivy growing in them.
This is what the flower beds have basically looked like since we moved in. Abandoned with weeds growing freely.
This picture was taken in the spring of of 2010. The first spring we lived in our house. This was my first ever attempt at planting flowers and trying to make a flower bed look nice. A couple of months after this was taken all the pretty flowers were dying and I haven't tried to do this again since. I don't believe that I have a very green thumb...I mean I have killed a bamboo plant. So I had to figure out a low to zero maintenace way to freshen up these flower beds. I also did not want to spend much money. On Mother's day my little family headed to Lowe's (one of my favorite stores) to figure out a solution to our ugly flower bed problem. We ended up leaving Lowe's with a couple of bags of Scott's red mulch and red lava rock. I also picked up some flower pots and paint but that is for a different project. =)

Tada! Here is the finished bed that is along the walk to the front door! Pretty snazzy looking huh?

This is the bed next the the garage (man cave) door. I have actually never even touched this flower bed since we moved in until today.
I realize that this low maintenance flower bed is not everyone's cup of tea but it is perfect for us. I like how the red mulch and lava rock pick up some of the colors that are in the house brick. I also like how the flower beds just look simple and neat.
Oh and I did mention in the post that I wanted to re-do these flower beds for cheap. So here is how it all adds up.
Scott's red mulch - $4.17 per bag X 4 bags
Red Lava Rock - Regular price $3.00 a bag but they were half off on Mother's Day so we picked up 1 bag for $1.50.
That brings our grand total to 18.18 (plus tax).
Pretty great huh?
